Enabling Social Change

This is a pullquote

I started my working life in the hospitality industry. One night the computer system crashed while I was managing a hotel. It fell to me, with no experience in IT, to work with the vendor to get the system up and running again. I must have done okay, because a couple of weeks later they offered me a job installing their platform in hotels all around the world! That’s how I got my start in the technology industry.

Many roles and many years later, after learning from some of Australia’s best entrepreneurs, I landed the position as CEO of Socialsuite.

Socialsuite is a technology platform that helps a diverse range of organisations (many of which are not-for-profit) measure their social impact. It helps to demonstrate that the interventions and services being provided to vulnerable people are actually having a positive impact on their lives.

For the organisations that use Socialsuite, it means they can monitor their results in real time and inform dynamic changes to their delivery model in order to improve outcomes.

By changing the lives of people in need, our customers are effectively changing the world. We provide the technology platform that enables them.

When I think about my purpose and the purpose of Socialsuite, I’m inspired by what we see our customers doing. We’re working with a group called Poverty Stoplight whose purpose is nothing less than the elimination of poverty throughout the world.

Poverty Stoplight uses our platform to help collect data to guide their mission. They use 50 indicators when undertaking field assessments on at-risk families. Their multidimensional approach covers basic things like income, but also includes financial diversity, whether they have access to a mobile phone or a road in front of their house. We’ve configured our system to support those indicators. Whatever the methodologies of our customers, we can typically integrate them into Socialsuite.

It’s inspirational to provide the infrastructure that supports Poverty Stoplight’s vision, and in turn it provides real purpose for us. Here we are, a Melbourne startup, and we’re contributing to the elimination of global poverty!

We help our customers achieve their goals by focusing on the fact that we’re a technology company. We stick to our knitting, so our platform is best of breed. As opposed to trying to solve global problems ourselves, we genuinely help the organisations that do by removing technology as an impediment.

When an organisation uses our technology, they capture evidence supporting the impact they’re having. Historically the effectiveness of these types of interventions has been measured retrospectively. Capital is deployed and then perhaps three years later, outcomes are measured, only to find that goals haven’t been reached, even though they were targeted with the best of intentions.

Our mission is to help our customers achieve things like eliminate poverty, provide alcohol and drug rehabilitation to people in need, or help kids continue their education beyond secondary school.

Organisations may find that they’ve ended up keeping the status quo, or even worse, done some damage. But if you’ve got technology in place you can course-correct along the way.
We collect data at a very granular level. In the past this was done manually, which is very difficult to do globally and for a large sample size. Socialsuite can go out to millions of people and do a longitudinal study at the click of a button. Not only do we collect data, we stitch it all together. Our database architecture is organised to instantaneously update dashboards that show long-term impact.

We continue to do discovery on Socialsuite’s functionality, always endeavouring to productise a feature that one of our customers wants, for the benefit of all our customers.
It goes hand in hand that if you can solve a customer issue and provide new features for them – and if your pricing is right, your marketing and distribution works, and your sales story is impactful – your platform will grow. I spend so much time of my time face-to-face with customers to make sure I’m well informed of their needs.

I’ve worked for organisations that had purpose, but for me there’s been no more purposeful organisation than Socialsuite. Our mission is to help our customers achieve things like eliminate poverty, provide alcohol and drug rehabilitation to people in need, or help kids continue their education beyond secondary school.

Those are just some of the many significant issues our customers are addressing. With Socialsuite as their technology partner, we’re enabling them to face those challenges and many more.
